A computer repair job can be hard to find, even if you know how to use a computer and are familiar with the industry.
It can be particularly challenging when you have to pay for work that has no obvious connection to your business, or even to your home.
The fact that you have an expensive computer that needs repairs means you have a higher chance of being turned away, said Rob Bickley, president of IT consulting firm EY.
“If you can’t get in to a service, it will be expensive for you,” he said.
Bickley and other experts say it is a common practice for home-based businesses to charge a sliding scale of what a technician will pay for repairs.
If a home-office company charges you $30,000, for example, a technician could be charged $15,000 to $20,000.
If you are a small business, he said, you could pay as little as $3,000 for a single-unit computer repair.

“It could be $20 or $30 per hour depending on the type of job.”
Brickley said that, if you are dealing with a large number of repairs, it might be worth it to try to find a cheaper way to get your job done.
He said that the typical home-repair price tag for a computer would range from $250 to $400.
If it is on a sliding-scale, the number of hours per week for a technician to complete the job could be as low as 10 hours.
“There’s no way you can get away with it, unless it’s a very high-cost job,” he added, explaining that there could be a waiting list of technicians to make sure the job is completed on time.
In most cases, home-home-office relationships are important to a business, Bickling said.
“A lot of times, it’s an opportunity to get more people in the office and that’s a good thing,” he suggested.

You want people to be working together,” said Mark Trew, a computer repair technician and owner of EY Computer Repair in Toronto.
Trew, who has two clients who have both been turned away at his shop because of the low cost of repairs and other reasons, said the customer service issues can be difficult.

For the average customer, the phone call can be a long time, said Bickly.
That’s not unusual.
People are very sensitive to their finances and when they have bills to pay, they don’t want to wait for an appointment.
If the service is low-priced, it could make it hard for a customer to get through the call.
To ensure the quality of the work, the company should give people time to look at their computer before taking it home and make sure they have everything that needs to be done.
You can’t just go and make it, said Mark Stoff, president and CEO of the Canadian Homecare Association.
Some companies also charge a fee for referrals, even though a computer will never be repaired or replaced.
According to the CMA, there are two ways to get a computer repaired or a computer replacement: The first is to call a technician who is qualified to perform the work and is able to provide an estimate of how much the cost of the repairs or replacement will be.
Or, if a computer is repaired for free, the technician can work out the cost using a computer calculator.
Another option is to get someone to do the repair, which is often the most cost-effective method, but some companies will charge a referral fee, Stoff said.
That’s a way to make money from your computer, but it doesn’t always make sense, he noted.
You should always ask for an estimate, but you shouldn’t just assume that the person will give you the exact amount, he advised.
Companies can also charge you to make a computer checkup, but they should only do so if you have the right to refuse the service, he pointed out.
Depending on where you live, you might have to wait weeks to get work done.
“Some people can’t wait for the call,” said Stoff. Most
