“I was sitting at home, watching the news,” said one tech worker, who asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation.
“And there was this guy who was like, ‘Oh, you guys need to find this tech guy to do this, or to find that tech guy.’
And I was like: ‘You’re kidding.'”
Tech workers, like many others in the tech sector, have long been wary of hiring outside candidates.
But they’ve also been drawn to candidates who speak their languages, have a passion for their industry and can work across disciplines.
The tech industry has long struggled with a high turnover rate among tech workers, which has been exacerbated by the influx of foreign workers in recent years.
A new report from the Labor Department released Wednesday shows the number of tech workers in the United States who say they’d be willing to work for free is the highest it’s been in more than five years.
The report, released just days before the Labor Day holiday, found that 17.7 percent of U.S. workers in tech have already taken a job from a contractor.
Nearly 60 percent said they would be willing “to work for a low hourly rate.”
The report found that in 2016, the vast majority of contractors hired U.K.-based tech workers to help with development of their products.
A similar number of contractors employed Americans in the same industries.
But as tech has boomed, the workforce has shrunk.
More than half of the tech workers surveyed by the Labor Dept. in 2016 said they were either “very likely” or “somewhat likely” to work on projects outside of their home country.
And while the tech workforce is growing, the number who say their pay is too high is also growing, according to the report.
The labor department reported that the average pay for tech workers last year was $19.75 an hour.
The Labor Department also released a report this week that found that tech workers are getting paid lower than workers in other fields.
For example, those in tech earned a median salary of $53,100 last year, compared to $73,700 in medical technology.
The report showed that the median annual pay for an American tech worker last year came in at $25,000, a drop of 7 percent from 2016.
The median annual income for an Australian tech worker was $44,300, down 9 percent from $67,300 in 2016.
The latest report also found that nearly a third of tech-related jobs were filled by women last year.
The data also found a strong correlation between tech workers’ wages and the percentage of jobs they held.
Women accounted for about 57 percent of all jobs in the industry last year in the U.Y.S., the Labor department said.
And about half of those jobs were tech-focused.
But about 30 percent of those women jobs were held by tech workers.
In addition to the tech industry, the report found a higher number of jobs were available in non-tech sectors.
Among these non-technical jobs, nearly 6 in 10 were held in manufacturing.
In contrast, just 14 percent of tech jobs were offered by a service sector employer, including food services, retail and hospitality, the Labor report said.
In 2016, about half the jobs in non.tech sectors were held outside of the U, which is up from 45 percent in 2015.
The number of U-S-based jobs declined for tech firms and declined for smaller companies in non.-tech industries, including restaurants, hotels and bars.
